Why Somatic Psychotherapy Somatic Psychotherapy is about you as a whole being. This is consistent with Eastern philosophy, where your mind, body and soul are what make up ‘YOU’.
In Somatic Therapy, we explore how the body expresses and reveals its psychological history. A person’s psychological history is alive and present in everything they do and the way in which they do it. It is in the way a person uses their body, in the way they move, where their tension is held, their posture, and their physical structure. So, it is essential to look at the body for psychological information. This understanding of the expressions of self through the body is one of the basic frameworks of Somatic Psychotherapy.
Our Western science-based culture, unlike the Eastern views, holds the mind and the body as separate units. This is especially apparent as medicine and science tend to work with either one or the other:
1. Physical symptoms
or
2. Psychological symptoms
We are complex biological beings with cognitive, emotional, psychological, physical, physiological, electrical and chemical circuits that are all interconnected with each other. When you suffer emotional or psychological stress, your body will also experience physical stress or limitations.
This is where Integrative Bodywork, appropriately and respectively used in Somatic Therapy, has the potential to open additional doorways of exploration beyond your cognitive awareness. Your bodies, your very cellular structure, can recall without judgement - whereas your conscious mind is extraordinarily protective and in this way becomes very practised at abridging, refining, and being selective about what you recall or retain. This is why it is often difficult to sort through our difficulties or challenges and heal ourselves without professional support.
Therefore your emotions, physical sensations, illness and thoughts are all connected. Somatic Therapy explores and makes sense of these connections and their impact on your wellbeing. If you have emotional, physical and relational challenges, Somatic Therapy can offer an effective way of working through these.
Somatic Psychotherapy is a professional, dimensional and complementary therapy with that of modern medicine and yet may also provide alternatives in certain cases where traditional practices have not proved effective.
