Transpersonal Therapy

The basic assumption of transpersonal therapy is that there is more to you than your personality. Transpersonal refers to that part of us which is beyond our current conscious awareness. Working with the Transpersonal, we explore getting in touch with and understanding our (as yet) unconscious self.  In this way, we can let go of the limitations of our personality, our self imposed personality boundaries and we are able to develop our intuition, our healing power and gain constructive control over our lives.

By exploring the unconscious patterns and the sources of these patterns, you may better understand

  • why you are the person you have become
  • why you react to certain situations the way you do
  • what you can do about it
  • how you can evolve personally and spiritually
  • that you are not powerless
  • you have more options than you thought
  • by taking personal responsibility for yourself you can create exciting changes.

Psychodymanic Therapy

Psychological problems communicate our internal conflicts over unacceptable or intolerable aspects of our selves, or in our relationships with others.  Our unconscious ‘defence mechanisms’ attempt to reject and suppress these unacceptable experiences.

Buried feelings, memories and desires may reappear subconsciously as ‘symptoms’, (see Somatic Psychotherapy) revealing hidden forces that oppose balanced development and self understanding.

For most people, there is a desire to be free of distress, and yet there is a counter tendency to resist the change that this may require. The crucial aim of therapy is to understand the origins of this resistance to change, and to explore appropriate ways to overcome it.

My role is to highlight and explore these resistances, and these are often seen within the therapeutic relationship itself.  In this way, I am engaging you in actively understanding your self and your problems.

Working concurrently with Transpersonal and Psychodynamic Therapy, together with Somatic Psychotherapy I can offer even greater depth to the levels of exploration and healing that you can achieve.

Integrative or Therapeutic Bodywork

Craniosacral, Myofascial Release and Polarity Therapy

I use Craniosacral, Myofascial Release and Polarity Therapy as another form of therapeutic language - one that can be complementary or at times even bypass verbal communication - allowing us to connect directly with the body and its memories in ways it understands – opening doorways beyond our cognitive awareness or memories.

When in good health, energy flows freely through our bodies. Stress results from an imbalance of energy, causing blockages, which often lead to physical symptoms and eventually to ill health.

Integrative Bodywork helps to dissolve these blocks of accumulated tension. Deep relaxation, improved circulation, energy flow, and relief from tension, anxiety, insomnia, depression, pain and digestive disorders all contribute to a sense of wellbeing, enhanced self-awareness, and connection with one’s body.

When working in this way, I place particular emphasis on the psychological understanding of the body.  Bodily sensations and awareness that come with this process are often fragments of traumatic memories from previous physical or emotional experiences or childhood traumas or abuse.

When memories of trauma are stored separately from ordinary experiences, and so somewhat hidden, there is still some expression of them. These expressions may be disconnected or unrelated to the original ‘forgotten’ or ‘buried’ experience, but yet are seen as physical symptoms, a sensory reliving of the experiences or behavioural aberrations. Often the gentle, non- invasive bodywork I utilise, uncovers understandings about these hidden memories, enabling understanding, physical and emotional release and finally, integration and growth.
